The most wonderful time of the year… to plan your Will

Boxes of mince pies clog the supermarket aisles, strains of Slade and George Michael fill the air, and you’re about the spend way too much time unravelling twisted knots of tree lights. If you can find them first.

Yes, the magic of Christmas is upon us, but as we look ahead to the New Year, there’s a new kind of magic waiting: the magic of a fresh start.

We know, we know. As a law firm, when we say ’fresh start’ you might be expecting something dry and dreary. But trust us, there’s one New Year’s resolution that can bring genuine peace of mind and protect everything you love: making or reviewing your Will.

The festive season brings our loved ones into sharp focus. We spend time with family, appreciate our partners, and maybe even welcome a few new additions.

It’s a time of reflection, making it the perfect moment to think about the future – the one where you’re not around to manage things.

Think of your Will as the ultimate, non-negotiable insurance policy for your peace of mind. It’s the only way you can legally ensure your assets go exactly where you intend them to go.

Most crucially, if you’re a parent, a Will allows you to nominate guardians for your children under 18. Without a Will, this vital decision is left to the courts, a process that can be stressful and prolonged for your children at an already difficult time.

The chilling reality of intestacy

While we love to keep things light, this is where we need to introduce a little legal gravity.

If you die in the UK without a valid Will, you die ‘intestate’. This doesn’t mean the Government takes everything but it does mean your estate is distributed according to the rigid Rules of Intestacy.

These ancient rules are utterly impersonal and don’t care about your cohabiting partner of 30 years, your favourite niece, or the charity you passionately supported.

They follow a strict, often outdated, family tree structure, potentially leaving your nearest and dearest in a financially difficult or completely excluded position.

Imagine the post-Christmas chaos you’re trying to avoid. Now add years of legal complexity and family disputes because your wishes weren’t formally documented. Not a very merry thought, is it?

Make it your best resolution yet

A Will isn’t just about money; it’s a final, profound act of love and responsibility. It provides a clear roadmap for your family, easing their burden during the toughest of times.

So, enjoy your Christmas, and when all the decorations are back in the box and you are making your plans for 2026, let us help you tick off the most important resolution of all.  One where the benefits will last forever.

Our team is here to guide you through the process, making it simple, straightforward, and completely tailored to your unique family circumstances and wishes.
